The CIA’s MK-Ultra program was a series of experiments into mind control and chemical interrogation techniques during the early Cold War. Conducted by the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency from the 1950s to the 1970s, MK-Ultra involved testing LSD and other substances on unwitting subjects, sometimes without informed consent. Some experiments were unethical and harmful, and many records were destroyed. Declassified documents and investigations, however, reveal that the program was limited in scope and ultimately unsuccessful.
Conspiracy theories claim that MK-Ultra achieved total mind control or continues today. There is no credible evidence to support those ideas. MK-Ultra did expose serious abuses of power and led to reforms and oversight of intelligence agencies. Understanding the real history helps separate fact from sensational fiction.
